The Line: Saudi Arabia’s Ambitious Vertical City Project

by Ethan

After a building in Dubai earned the recognition of the tallest skyscraper in the world, and in UAE, Saudi Arabia is seemly going to win a recognition. It has recently been announced that the country is going to be in the process of reinventing the traditional pattern of urban areas to achieve this task, and a proposal for building a vertical city has been released. The aim should be to start moving from an entirely theoretical standpoint to having a deeper understanding of how the primary purpose of cities and future cities will be achieved. What has happened in the past and where a city began is also very important.

Through all human history, the first major urban center is said to have emerged around the early third millennium B.C. in southern Mesopotamia between the Euphrates River and the river Tigris. The size of it amounts to 50 towns with only 12 becoming the permanent states. There was only a dozen of them which were considered as city-states permanently. Of particular interest is Uruk which has the distinction of being the first city and remained to be occupied by 50,000 inhabitants.

The Union of Arab Emirates: the Vertical city of the world.
The urban feature called “The Line” is a futuristic city that will be situated in the middle of the Saudi desert and the municipality will me designed as an intelligent vertical set up. This is not just a future intellectual idea: the process has actually kicked off already. The smart city which will go by the name of City3030 is located along the country’s northwest border, in the region of Tabuk, where the latest reports suggest that by 2030 we will see the inauguration of this latest feat of technology.

By implementing the first model of such a city, we not only demonstrate the feasibility of this idea, but also make it more environmentally friendly and planet earth ready. Engineers are trying to change dramatically both the way that we build sanctuaries of urban areas/cities, and the way we live there.

Usually, city districts are formed from the connection of streets or clubs vertically on a city landscape. The line strives to break the mold by creating a town that is not in the traditional two-dimensional, even as it resembles skyscrapers. For this city model one should assume that moving within different areas will be accomplished by vertical paths, either by ascending or descending directions. Vertical arrangements of landscapes including natural parks will be the hallmark of the new city.

Why the name The Line makes the song so? The city management and town planners came up with the name because the city will appear (on ground) like a straight line across the desert when viewed from above, and the approximately 170 km long and 200 m wide line will be something to marvel at. We are hereby introducing the future of urban design inside our smart city within which all of the neighborhoods will emerge vertically going up to a maximum height of 500 meters.

In terms of population, the smart city could provide residence to around 9 million people and area wise, the whole system would lay across in 34 square kilometers of planar zone. Meanwhile, residents can enjoy the thrill of both walking and riding a specialized train that inaugurates in just 20 min.
